With COVID-19, otherwise known as coronavirus, currently running rampant over the world, one wrestling company, Brittania Wrestling Promotions, took the opportunity to keep things a little light on Saturday by holding what may the first-ever toilet paper roll on a pole match.

Yes, you read that right. But if you’ve been following the news, this should come as no surprise. One Google search of “toilet paper” reveals countless articles detailing the shortage of seemingly the world’s most important commodity. Here are just a few of the headlines from the past few days:

  • Man runs toilet paper exchange on California street corner – SF Gate
  • Outer Banks restaurant offers free toilet paper with meals amid coronavirus shortages – Raleigh News & Observer
  • Toilet paper, anyone? Consumers buy out supplies – VTDigger
  • An unlikely hero: Surfer sets up toilet paper exchange on Encinitas street corner – San Diego Union-Tribune

Toilet paper. No one really knows why packages and packages of TP have been flying off the shelves in insane fashion given the coronavirus does not cause adverse digestive reactions. Perhaps it is fear of being locked in one’s house without enough TP to spare? Or that grocery stores will eventually close and people won’t be able to buy needed items such as TP? Fear and panic tend to set in when there is a global pandemic, such as the coronavirus. And that creates irrational behavior such as people buying enough TP to last for months. When the world descends into chaos/madness, people respond accordingly.

On Saturday, Brittania Wrestling Promotions had a little fun with the world’s crisis by holding a toilet paper roll on a pole match. In the history of wrestling, there have been some crazy matches especially in the “on a pole” variety. WCW had the infamous “Judy Bagwell on a pole match” and “Viagra on a pole match” and recently, Ryback was booked to fight Colt Cabana in a “CM Punk action figure on a pole match.” So sticking a roll of TP on a pole is not that strange, but in context of what is going on in the world and the mass hysteria surrounding toilet paper, it’s quite hilarious. While not initially advertised as such, the tag team match between the Scallywags and the FRONTline turned into a battle for the right to win the roll of TP, which may be the world’s most important currency right now. In the end, the Alpha Kid climbed onto the shoulders of his much taller teammate, Joey Marcus, and grabbed the roll in victory for the Scallywags.

It’s good to know that in light of everything going, we can still enjoy a moment of laughter.
