It was revealed today by Pro Wrestling Sheets that longtime Ring of Honor star BJ Whitmer has resigned his position with ROH and left the company. According to the report, Whitmer was unhappy with management and his current role with the company and decided to part ways with the promotion he’s been a part of for 15 years.
BJ Whitmer started out in 2000, a product of Les Thatcher‘s Heartland Wrestling Association (HWA) where he won the HWA Cruiserweight Championship and became a 2x HWA Heavyweight Champion. He spent his formative years with HWA and IWA Mid South, where also became a 2x IWA Mid South Heavyweight Champion. Like many of his IWA Mid South contempories, like CM Punk, Tyler Black (Seth Rollins), Chris Hero (Kassius Ohno) and Bryan Danielson (Daniel Bryan), he would venture over to the new indie promotion on the block, Ring of Honor. Whitmer debuted in 2003 at January’s Revenge on The Prophecy event, in a fatal four way in a losing effort to Paul London that also included Cabana and Homicide.
Whitmer initially joined the stable The Prophecy, lead by Christopher Daniels, where he would win the ROH World Tag Team titles twice with Dan Maff, but he would work with multiple stables throughout his 15 years with the company. As part of Lacey’s Angels with Jimmy Jacobs, he would win the ROH World Tag Team titles on two more occasions. In 2013, he would finally lead his own group, Decade, that included Adam “Hangman” Page, Roderick Strong and Jimmy Jacobs.
He would continue to work the indies, sticking close to his Ohio roots, and capture the AIW Intense Championship in Absolute Intense Wrestling (AIW) in 2012, as well as the AIW Tag Team titles with his tag team The Forgotten alongside Jacobs. In 2013, Whitmer was forced into retirement due to a neck injury sustained by a piledriver from The Kingdom’s Mike Bennett, with Whitmer taking on commentary duties with ROH as well as acting as Decade’s manager. His retirement was short lived, and he soon returned to in-ring action with ROH, AIW and IWA Mid South (amongst others), until his final retirement in 2017. This past June, he was appointed one of the trainers at the ROH Dojo in Baltimore.
