SmackDown 1000: Return of Rey Mysterio

WWE finally broke the news many have been waiting for: that Rey Mysterio will be returning. At least, for another special appearance. Rey will be appearing at the special 1000th episode of SmackDown Live. This will be airing on October 16th on the USA Network.

The ‘will he, won’t he’ saga of Rey Mysterio returning to WWE has been at a fever pitch for all of 2018. He surprised us in January by appearing in the Royal Rumble, as speculation ensued over his contract status. Rey popped up at the WWE Network-exclusive special, The Greatest Royal Rumble in April. More speculation over his status ensued. In June, Rey Mysterio was announced as a special downloadable character for the game WWE 2K19 leading to even more speculation over his contract status. To date, there has not been official confirmation from either WWE or Rey Mysterio on his official status.

It should not be forgotten that he made huge contributions to the SmackDown brand. From his debut in 2002 until the time he left in 2015, he had been an integral part of that roster. During his time on SmackDown, Rey was a decorated champion. His resume includes the Cruiserweight, WWE Tag Team, Intercontinental and World Heavyweight championships. He also won a Royal Rumble while apart of SmackDown. Rey was also part of numerous high-profile storylines. Some of the most memorable being his feuds with Eddie Guerrero, Batista and CM Punk. The feud with Eddie over the legitimacy and “custody” of Rey’s son Dominik is still talked about today.

While other past stars of SmackDown such as The Undertaker and Batista will be at the 1000th episode extravaganza, so will Rey Mysterio. Whether Rey will continue to appear for WWE is well, a mystery. We’ll just have to stay tuned to see just where the King of Mystery will pop up next!
