Preview: IPW:UK Anniversary XIV (9/22/18)

International Pro Wrestling UK (IPW:UK) celebrates 14 years with a doubleheader.  Night one is their anniversary celebration as they bring WWE UK’s British Strong Style (Pete Dunne, Tyler Bate, Trent Seven) to IPW’s biggest show of the year.  With only a few matches announced so far we have a well built card from IPW that shows the direction they have gone in this year.

Match 1: Andreas Corr & Ashley Dunn W/ Johnny Storm vs Amir Jordan & Kurtis Chapman

Some of the most hated men in IPW face two Z-Force division standouts.  Johnny Storm has turned into someone that IPW fans despise an he has been joined by his crew of Corr and Dunn.  Their opponents are two younger guys that have never teamed in IPW before and are used to the high octane Z-Force division.  While this may put them at a disadvantage they are two extremely talented individuals, as Amir Jordan is a former Z-Force champion and is already a part of NXT UK.  Chapman is one of Revolution Pro Wrestling (Rev Pro’s) standout young wrestlers and at just 20 has the wrestling world at his feet.

Match 2: Sammy Smooth vs Scott Star

A 4-year rivalry comes to an end as Scott Star goes out against his biggest rival. These two debuted in 2014 and proceeded to have six matches against one another in 2014 and 2015.  They went 3-3 as neither man could get past the other.  In 2016, they joined forces as Smoothstar and were part of the anti-Jimmy Havoc crew that were fending off the heels. They did battle in 2016 once again as well, in the UK Future 8 final as Scott Star picked up the win and the All England title.  In 2017, they would go to war again over the All England title.  By the time Star stopped performing, this rivalry was 7-5 in favour of Star.  For one last time, Star and Smooth do battle in IPW as Star says goodbye to the wrestling business.

Match 3: Pete Dunne vs Mark Haskins

Two of the UK’s best face off once again and for the first time here in IPW.  Haskins has been the leading name in IPW’s turnaround and represented them as champion for most of 2018.  His role as indie superstar is important for a company like IPW to help them stand out.  Haskins faces WWE UK Champion Pete Dunne, and Dunne is no stranger to IPW as he has competed here in the past.  What’s cool here is this match feels like WWE vs the Indies and the crowd will be white hot to see Pete Dunne.  Dunne and Haskins are no strangers to each other and both of them have been at the top of British Wrestling for a few years now.  Two of the best, two of the biggest names, a show stealer, and it’s all going down at IPW’s Anniversary.

Match 4: IPW Women’s Championship: Xia Brookside (c) vs Bobbi Tyler

Xia Brookside has been IPW’s fighting champion for over 9 months.  During her reign, she has defeated big names like Kay Lee Ray, Tenille Dashwood, Zoe Lucas and Rhia O’Reilly.  Tyler has been a thorn in her side, constantly attacking her from behind and leaving her laying.  The contrast of the cowardly attacker and the noble fighting champion is simple storytelling at it’s best, but it has the crowd invested in the main feud of this women’s division.

Match 5: IPW World Championship: Kip Sabian (c) vs Doug Williams

Young Kip Sabian takes on a British Wrestling trailblazer in his second defence.  Ever since becoming the first ever 2x Z-Force champion in IPW history, he has been earmarked for success.  After winning the international battle royal, he cashed in his title briefcase (much like Money in the Bank) and won the IPW World title from Mark Haskins.  His marquee defence at this huge show is against a British wrestling legend. Doug Williams has been in IPW since 2006 and despite capturing 40 titles in his storied career has never been IPW World Champion.  The future faces the past as Williams aims to win the one title that has always alluded him.

IPW has a fantastic looking set of events for their anniversary weekend, as the day after this show on the 23rd of September, IPW:UK invite Pro Wrestling NOAH legend Naomichi Marufuji to face Doug Williams as part of IPW Final Encounter.
