Alberto El Patron Returning to AAA for TripleMania XXVI

Yesterday, Mexico’s top promotion, AAA, announced the return of Alberto El Patron to the company, who will be facing an as yet-unnamed “international superstar”, at this summer’s AAA TripleMania XXVI on August 25, 2018. It will mark El Patron’s first match back with AAA since 2015.

Alberto El Patron last worked for AAA in 2015, following a return to the company he began with in 2000. Following his departure from the WWE in late 2014, he returned to AAA in September of 2014 at Sin Limite: Ring & Rock StAAArs 3, where he was victorious in a trios match alongside La Parka and Myzteziz (the former Sin Cara and now Caristico). In December of that year, Alberto would defeat Texano Jr. for the AAA World Heavyweight title at Guerra De Titanes. He would hold the world title for nearly a year, as well as begin work for AAA’s North American co-production Lucha Underground on its first season. It was his first and only AAA World Championship, although he had previously held the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship for 533 days in 2007-2008 as the masked Dos Caras Jr.

Alberto El Patron left AAA in 2015, while still World Champion, due to what he perceived as a disorganization within the promotion, and ended up returning to the WWE. Due to dates with the WWE, he was unable to return to drop the title so was ultimately stripped of the World Championship. As Dos Caras Jr., he debuted with AAA in 2000 and stayed there for three years, before heading to rival CMLL from 2004 through 2009, before signing with the WWE.

The announcement came at the same time that rumors of a potential return to the WWE emerged, following reports he was at the WWE Headquarters last week to record interview footage for an upcoming Rey Mysterio DVD, although it is more likely that El Patron will be re-signing with Impact Wrestling when his current deal expires in April.
