James Robinson has taken the NFL world by storm in just his first season. The Jacksonville Jaguars rookie running back is a heavy candidate for Rookie of the Year. With a match-up against the Minnesota Vikings approaching on Sunday, Robinson could be the key to a Jaguars victory. The Jaguars will start veteran Mike Glennon at quarterback for the second straight game. While that may be the top storyline for some Jags fans, Robinson having another opportunity to prove his worth is a more important topic. Through the first 11 games of the 2020 season, the rookie running back has 890 rushing yards on 194 attempts and six touchdowns. He is averaging 4.6 yards per carry, albeit not starting all 11 games.
When Leonard Fournette was let go by the team, Robinson began earning more playing time. The coaching staff fully believes in the young running back and with every game he is continuing to earn that trust. Currently, he ranks third in the NFL in total rushing yards and he is tied for 10th in total rushing touchdowns.
James Robinson Key To Jaguars Victory Over Vikings
Jaguars Rushing Offense
Sure, the Jaguars are averaging just 101.2 rushing yards per game as a team. On the season, the team has just 1,113 combined rushing yards and eight touchdowns on the ground. But Robinson can quickly turn on the jets and take a few carries to the end zone. The Jaguars first year back has a bright future ahead and has already made a lasting impact on the team. Last week in a close 27-25 loss to the Cleveland Browns, the rookie rushed for 128 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries.
Taking on the Vikings
Facing the Vikings defense won’t be an easy task. However, Robinson should be able to bust through the defense and fight for yards. Minnesota’s defense is allowing just 120.7 rushing yards per game (4.3 yards per attempt). If the Jaguars offensive line is successful at opening up some holes for Robinson, he will have an opportunity to have a productive outing this week. Robinson gives the Jaguars a potential future star in the backfield. In just his first year in the league, he is showing the team that an undrafted rookie can fight his way up the depth chart. Over the past three games, he has amassed 310 rushing yards (just over 100 yards per game).
Robinson putting forth another strong outing against a playoff hungry Vikings team on Sunday would make the case even stronger to give Robinson the Rookie of the Year award. But, more importantly, it will help the Jags get a win this week. However, Robinson will have to get past the first tacklers and into open space to help the Jaguars move the ball down the field.
James Robinson has quickly emerged as a new fan favorite on the Jacksonville Jaguars, and it is clear to see why. Him having a productive outing against the Minnesota Vikings, and taking some pressure off of Mike Glennon, will be the key to a Jaguars victory this week.
