Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is “sick.”
Mahomes is not physically ill, at least not that he or the Chiefs have divulged. But he is feeling the emotional toll of losing one of his favorite people from his favorite team. No, it is not a Chiefs teammate. Mahomes is taking Luka Doncic’s trade from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers pretty hard, requesting that the Chiefs’ social media team “chill” after their latest post.
Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes Left ‘Sick’ After Blockbuster Trade
Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ Favorite Player Traded
ESPN’s Shams Charania first reported the trade on February 1. The magnitude was so unbelievable that Charania had to confirm that he had not been hacked and that the trade was legitimate multiple times.
Mahomes, like millions of other sports fans – and even media members – was left reeling at the announcement.
“Wait what?” Mahomes posted on X following Charania’s initial report. “I’m sick rn….
Yes, this is real. Sources tell ESPN: Full trade:
– Lakers: Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber, Markieff Morris
– Mavericks: Anthony Davis, Max Christie, 2029 LAL 1st
– Jazz: Jalen Hood-Schifino, 2025 Clippers 2nd, 2025 Mavericks 2nd https://t.co/bltojdTaQj

Doncic is a five-time All-Star and All-NBA selection – the equivalent to Pro Bowls and All-Pro nods, respectively – and led the Mavs to the NBA Finals last season. The decision also made Doncic ineligible for the largest contract in NBA history.
He was in line for a five-year, $345 million supermax extension that the Lakers do not have to concern themselves with.
Chiefs Social Media Team Inadvertently Trolls Patrick Mahomes
The Chiefs social media team accidentally trolled their superstar QB with a video. It featured Mahomes revealing personal facts, including that Doncic was his favorite NBA player.
“Yall gotta chill….,” Mahomes posted on X on February 2 along with the video package in question.

“Never scheduling a post again,” the Chiefs social admin posted in reply to Mahomes.
Mahomes built a strong relationship with former Mavericks governor Mark Cuban. Cuban sold his majority stake in the franchise, and current general manager Nico Harrison swung a monumental blockbuster that left Mahomes and many others flabbergasted.
Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a future first-round pick went to the Mavs, Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris to the Lakers.
The Utah Jazz landed Jalen Hood-Schifino and second-round picks in the deal too.
Patrick Mahomes Touts Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving Pairing
Davis is a nine-time All-Star, five-time All-NBA pick, and won a championship with the Lakers in 2020. He will join Kyrie Irving as the co-star on the new-look Mavs.
“Kyrie and AD going to be nice tho!” Mahomes said in another post.
Mahomes’ favorite team entered play on February 2 eighth in the Western Conference standings. But they are just 4.0 games out of the No. 4 seed.
Perhaps this trade will spark another Finals run that Mahomes can attend. He became a talking point during last year’s trip. It will look much different this time around, though, with Doncic no longer leading the way.
Mahomes must shake off his dismay.
The Chiefs are entering their final week of preparation for Super Bowl LIX, a rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Mahomes and the Chiefs are chasing NFL history, having already become the first two-time reigning champion to make it back for a third straight try. But their sights have long been set on being the first-ever team to win three straight.
