Chiefs Wideout Could Be Recruiting Frustrated All-Pro

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb is frustrated with his current team, and Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Marquise Brown might be working behind the scenes to recruit the superstar wide receiver. A first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Lamb quickly established himself as one of the most reliable wideouts in the game. Last year, the Oklahoma product earned First-Team All-Pro honors while recording a league-high 135 receptions for 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Now entering the final year of his rookie contract, Lamb is hoping for a well-deserved extension to make him the highest-paid receiver in the league. The Cowboys, who also need to set money aside for Dak Prescott and Micah Parsons, don’t appear interested in paying him. Jerry Jones says signing Lamb to an extension isn’t a priority, and Lamb responded by laughing.

CeeDee Lamb and the Cowboys could be on the verge of a diverse, and Marquise Brown might be trying to recruit his old friend. Brown recently changed his Twitter header to a picture of him and Lamb from their college days, and Lamb did the same.

Marquise Brown Hints At Potential Chiefs, CeeDee Lamb Trade

Let’s start with the usual disclaimer: Marquise Brown is not Kansas City’s general manager and doesn’t have the power to execute a CeeDee Lamb trade. The Cowboys appear uninterested in trading their homegrown talent, and a few new Twitter photos won’t change that. However, given Lamb’s uncertain future combined with the Cowboys’ unwillingness to strike a deal with any of their homegrown stars, you have a recipe for a potential trade.

For the sake of argument, let’s assume the Chiefs find a way to pair CeeDee Lamb with Marquise Brown. Dallas won’t give him up for free, so Kansas City would likely need to part with a first-round pick, a player, and another mid-round pick. The Cowboys will probably want a wide receiver in return, and the most likely candidate is Rashee Rice. Even with his inevitable upcoming suspension, the former second-round pick has a bright future and is an NFL-caliber talent. This is a steep price to pay for any non-quarterback, especially considering they’d still need to hand out a (probable) record-setting extension.

Setting the League on Fire

As of this posting, the Chiefs currently have just north of $15 million in 2024 cap space and are projected to have $13.36 million in cap space next year. On paper, they could probably make a CeeDee Lamb trade work, but it would dramatically impact their ability to build the roster. The Chiefs are all-in on 2024, but they should keep a slight eye on the future. Nick Bolton, Creed Humphrey, Trey Smith, and Marquise Brown will be free agents, and Kansas City will have to watch some of those guys leave if they land CeeDee Lamb.

Even then, it might be worth it. Pairing Patrick Mahomes with Marquise Brown, first-round pick Xavier Worthy, and star tight end Travis Kelce will create the most unstoppable offense in the league. The Chiefs still have a strong defense and opposing teams won’t be able to keep up with this elite unit. The Chiefs are trying to be the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls, and Lamb could be a crucial piece to that puzzle.
