Three NFL Breakout Candidates Heading into the 2026 Season

Every NFL season produces a handful of players who take the next step and become stars. These three NFL breakout candidates are in the perfect position to do exactly that in 2026. One enters the season in a contract year with plenty of motivation to earn a long-term extension, while the other two are second-year players looking to leap, showing flashes as rookies. Increased opportunity, improved situations, and elite talent all point toward massive seasons ahead. Whether you’re looking for fantasy football sleepers or future stars, these three NFL breakout candidates are names to keep a close eye on throughout the season.

Three NFL Breakout Candidates Heading into the 2026 Season

Matthew Golden, Green Bay Packers

Wide receiver Matthew Golden‘s rookie season did not live up to expectations after the Green Bay Packers selected him 23rd overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. While he flashed his potential in the Packers playoff game, the overall production was disappointing for a player drafted that high.

Golden finished his rookie campaign with just 29 receptions for 361 receiving yards and no touchdowns. Despite the modest numbers, the talent never disappeared. He possesses elite speed, dependable hands, and outstanding big-play ability that made him one of the top receivers in the 2025 draft class.

The biggest reason Golden is one of these three breakout players 2026 is opportunity. Green Bay moved on from Romeo Doubs and traded Dontayvion Wicks, leaving more than 130 targets available. Golden is expected to step directly into a starting role, and everything points toward a much larger workload. If quarterback Jordan Love continues to develop, Golden has a legitimate chance to become the Packers next featured receiver while also emerging as one of fantasy football’s biggest sleepers.

Luther Burden III, Chicago Bears

Chicago Bears wide receiver Luther Burden III enters his second NFL season after being selected 39th overall in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft out of Missouri.

Burden has potential to blossom into one of the league’s most dangerous wideouts with the ball in his hands. His route running, acceleration, and yards-after-the-catch ability make him a constant threat to produce explosive plays. He also finished the 2025 season strong with 4 or more receptions in four of his final five regular season games.

Chicago’s offense is set up perfectly for Burden to break out. Following the departure of DJ Moore, Burden is expected to see a significant increase in targets. He also benefits from playing in a young offense led by elite offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, whose creative scheme should maximize Burden’s strengths.

Everything points toward a massive second season. Increased volume, great quarterback, elite yards-after-catch ability, and an outstanding offensive system make Burden one of the most exciting fantasy football breakout candidates entering 2026.

DeMarvion Overshown, Dallas Cowboys

DeMarvion Overshown has all the talent in the world to become one of the NFL’s breakout defensive players. The biggest concern has never been his ability. It has simply been staying healthy.

After missing his entire rookie season because of a torn ACL and then suffering another significant knee injury that limited him to just six games in 2025, Overshown finally enters training camp fully healthy. If he can remain on the field, the Dallas Cowboys believe he is ready for a much larger role.

New defensive coordinator Christian Parker is expected to play a major role in Overshown’s development. Parker has emphasized building his defense around the strengths of his players rather than forcing them into rigid roles. That philosophy fits Overshown perfectly.

Overshown is expected to take over the MIKE linebacker position and wear the green dot, making him responsible for communicating the defense. Dallas also plans to use his elite athleticism creatively, allowing him to blitz more often and attack quarterbacks while still making plays from the linebacker position. His sideline-to-sideline speed and versatility give Parker a unique weapon to build around.

Adding even more motivation is the fact that Overshown enters the final year of his rookie contract. A healthy season could earn him a lucrative long-term extension, making this one of the biggest years of his career.

Outlook for 2026

Every season produces players who exceed expectations, and these three NFL breakout candidates players have all the ingredients to make that leap in 2026. Golden has the opportunity to become a featured weapon in Green Bay’s offense. Burden is expected to receive a major increase in targets within one of the league’s most exciting young offenses. Overshown has elite talent, a creative new defensive coordinator in Parker, and the added motivation of a contract year. Do not be surprised if all three become some of the biggest breakout stories of the 2026 NFL season.
