Sergei Bobrovsky Signs Deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs

Bobrovsky has played for the Philadelphia Flyers, Columbus Blue Jackets, and the Florida Panthers over his 16-year NHL career. This season, the Russian goalie earned a 27-23-1 record with a 3.07 goals-against-average and .877 save percentage. Bobrovsky also registered four shutouts in a season that may have been down according to his lofty standards.

Over his career, Bobrovsky has a career record of 456-266-58 with a 2.61 GAA and .912 save percentage. The Novokuznetsk, Russia native has also recorded 53 shutouts across his lengthy NHL career. Philadelphia originally signed Bobrovsky as an undrafted free agent after four professional seasons with Metallurg Novokuznetsk in Russia.

The 37-year-old is a two-time Stanley Cup winner and has two Vezina Trophy wins to his name. Bobrovsky is also a two-time NHL All-Star. He’s also represented his native Russia at the international level. The decorated goalie has won gold, silver, and bronze at the IIHF World Championships in three consecutive years.

What it Means

Bobrovsky’s signing drew some criticism with him getting $10 million. However, the Panthers got every penny’s worth from that massive contract. The veteran netminder backstopped Florida to back-to-back Stanley Cup championships.

Bobrovsky has cemented his legacy as one of the best Russian goalies of all time. He’ll most certainly get a call from the Hall of Fame at some point in his retirement. However, Bobrovsky still has something left to prove in his NHL career.

A veteran netminder like Bobrovsky can still will a team to a win. The goalie still feels like he can be the number one cop on the force. Toronto has hopefully shored up a massive hole in their lineup that has caused them plenty of trouble over the last few seasons.
