Alex Steen general manager

St Louis Blues Name Alex Steen as New General Manager

The long wait is over for a St Louis Blues great. News emerged on Tuesday that the Blue have officially made Alex Steen general manager of the club. The former Blues great takes over the GM duties on the eve of July 1 free agency. Steen replaces longtime general manager Doug Armstrong in the post. Armstrong will stay on with the team as president of hockey operations.

Alexander Steen will officially become the general manager of the Blues on July 1, but that transition is already well underway. #stlblues DETAILS ➡️ stlblues.me/48njcRo

St Louis Blues Make Alex Steen General Manager

Steen recorded 622 points between stints with the Blues and the Toronto Maple Leafs. He registered 245 goals and 377 assists in 1,018 career games. The former Blues forward also totaled 36 points in 91 Stanley Cup Playoff games. Steen had tabbed as Armstrong’s successor, and he’ll have a hard act to follow.

Armstrong was the builder of the 2019 Blues team that beat the Boston Bruins for the Stanley Cup. The longtime general manager has been mentoring Steen the last two seasons in order to prepare him for the job.

It looked like Steen hit the ground running in his first day on the job. He tendered qualifying offers to Connor McMichael and defenceman Leo Loof and placed forward Jonathan Drouin on waivers. St Louis also picked up Mason McTavish and Brandon Carlo via trade.

The Blues also reportedly signed Jonatan Berggren to a one-year deal worth $2 million according to ESPN’s Emily Kaplan. Berggren was not given a qualifying offer. However, he won’t make it to the July 1 free agent market.

What It Means

It doesn’t look like Steen is going to ease into the job. The Blues finished four points behind the Los Angeles Kings for the final Western Conference playoff spot. However, the Blues don’t seem to be content with a slow rebuild.

One thing that the Blues do have to deal with is the division they are in. St Louis is stuck in the loaded Central Division with tough teams like the Colorado Avalanche and the Minnesota Wild standing in its way.

The Blues are trying to make all the right moves to get themselves back in the postseason mix. Steen doesn’t seem like he wants to wait too long for that return.
