Today, the news dropped of a shiny, new A.J. Greer contract to report amid all the madness that is beginning on the night before the NHL’s free agent frenzy. After being traded from the Florida Panthers yesterday to allow for negotiations to take place, and being rumoured earlier today to sign an extension, it has now happened . Let’s check out the details, and why this is a great move for Greer and the Ducks.

A New A.J. Green Contract Announced
The deal is for four years and has an average annual value of $4.25 million. In addition, in all four years, he has a 10-team no trade clause, as a little bit of leverage gained.
One teams loss, is another’s gain, as for the news of the latest A.J. Greer contract status, is that he had essentially priced himself out of the Florida Panthers. We guess it is good or bad, depending on how you look at it. Bad for the Panthers in that Greer is someone they’ll need to replace. Although Radko Gudas will provide toughness if they do end up signing him. Also, the Panthers had previously moved some draft assets in order to acquire Garnet Hathaway from the Philadelphia Flyers. It had been known that Greer was very unlikely to return to Florida. Technically, it could also be bad for Greer, say if Florida goes on to win the Stanley Cup without him, but that’s another story. Anaheim now adds a great piece of physicality to spruce up their lineup.
The good side of this story is that Greer earned himself a solid payday. Greer is a pretty tough customer, hitting the scales at 224 lbs, and he is 6’3″. He’s a guy a lot of teams would love to inject into their lineup, when the Stanley Cup Playoffs come around. Furthermore, his 2025-26 campaign was a breakout season offensively. He finished with 17 goals (his previous high was six), 15 assists (previous high 11), and he managed a very marksman like, 16.3 shooting percentage. One reason was his increase in ice time. A career average of 9:47, and that was bumped up, too, but his 2025-26 season saw him on the ice for an average of 12:26.
This is a great signing, really for the team and Greer. It will be interesting to see how his offence carries over, but his toughness is the real prize. He’s a guy that helps you win those tough divisional matchups, and in the postseason. An element this Duck team will love to have going forward.
