Bowen Byram Contract Possibilites

Rumour: The Athletic’s Peter Baugh looked into what Byram’s next contract may look like. The team has a number of RFAs on the team that need to be re-signed. Colorado has $70.2 million already allocated for the 2023-24 salary cap. Alex Newhook and Denis Malgin are also slated to be RFAs in the coming off-season.

One thing that could change the complexion of contract negotiations is the status of team captain Gabriel Landeskog. He makes $7 million through the end of the 2028-29 season. However, the Swede missed most of the season due to an injury. Putting Landeskog on long-term injured reserve could give Colorado a little more money to play with in signing players. The Avalanche also want to try and get something done in regards to an extension for Devon Toews down the way.

What a Bowen Byram Contract May Look Like

Baugh uses Noah Dobson‘s contract with the New York Islanders as a template for Byram. Dobson’s deal was for three seasons at $4 million that will still have him as an RFA at the end of 2024-25. The Islanders defenceman will have arbitration rights at the end of the deal.

Byram is a part of Colorado’s future plans and management will want to get him signed. The Landeskog situation could allow for the two parties to possibly get something done long term. However, the Dobson-type deal might be the best play for the two sides since the cap may only go up $1 million.
