It’s another edition of NHL rumours as we roll toward the March 3 trade deadline. Teams are trying to shore up their scoring depth. However, there are some worries about cost with the $82.5 million salary cap. There’s going to have to be some fancy math in order for some trades to happen. This is due to the large contracts that some of these players signed. Today we look at an update on a James van Riemsdyk deal.

All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

James van Riemsdyk Deal Update

Rumour: On Saturday night’s Hockey Night in Canada’s Headlines segment, Jeff Marek offered an update on the American winger. Marek said that the Winnipeg Jets, Minnesota Wild and Vegas Golden Knights could be teams interested in van Riemsdyk. All three of those teams need help bolstering their scoring. Adding “JVR” could help in the middle six of a team’s forward group.

The Middletown, N.J. native currently holds a $7 million salary cap hit. This high price tag would likely need the Philadelphia Flyers to take on some of that salary. Philadelphia is out of contention for the Stanley cup Playoffs and will sell off some of its assets.

Who Makes the James van Riemsdyk Deal?

The Jets, Wild and Golden Knights all could use the scoring help. All three teams are trying to position themselves in the Western Conference playoffs. Each of these teams is up against the cap and would need to have the Flyers retain some of the veteran’s salary.

The 33-year-old only has eight goals so far this season. However, he could boost the offensive fortunes of a contending team. The Flyers forward is a two-time 30-goal scorer and can help a contender. Playing for a chance at the Stanley Cup could also put a little jump in van Riemsdyk’s step.
