NHL Rumours: New York Islanders Emerging As A Destination For Top Defenceman

Arizona Coyotes Jakob Chychrun

So much is going on in the hockey world. Teams are rising to the top and falling to the bottom. In breaking news, three significant players such as Aaron Ekblad, Gabriel Landeskog, and Josh Norris, are all out with injuries. In addition to that, the rumour mill keeps churning further and further. Today’s rumours focus on Arizona Coyotes Jakob Chychrun. The defenceman could be headed to New York.

Arizona Coyotes Jakob Chychrun Could Land In New York

Rumour: Elliotte Friedman discusses the Islanders being rumoured in the Jakob Chychrun sweepstakes.

The Arizona Coyotes defencemen is a few weeks away from his return. And even though he is injured, he is the hottest commodity in the trade market. Chychrun still has three years left on his contract with a team-friendly cap hit of $4.6 million dollars. Any contending team looking to upgrade their back end should come calling. With the New York Islanders being in the mix, does it make sense for them?

Do The Islanders Make Sense?

The Islanders are in a weird spot. This team is two seasons removed from being in the Eastern Conference Finals. Granted, they are one of the older teams in the league, but General Manager Lou Lamoriello believes in this club. Even though the team desperately needs a winger to play alongside Mathew Barzal, Chychrun would be a nice grab.

The price for Chychrun is steep. Possibly a prospect and draft picks would be going to Arizona. Lamoriello has always built his teams from the back end out, and grabbing Chychrun would bolster a deep defensive core. Considering the Islanders are not in rebuild mode, and Lamoriello believes this roster can contend, going all in for a playoff run wouldn’t be unreasonable.

Is There A Fit For Chychrun On Long Island?

Arizona Coyotes defenceman Jakob Chychrun is a valuable player to have. He can log big minutes and also slot in on the power play. The biggest asset to his game is that he can play both sides of the blue line. The top four of the blue line is stout with Noah Dobson, Adam Pelech, Ryan Pulock, and Alexander Romanov. Chychrun could be an upgrade over Scott Mayfield and Sebastian Aho. It would not solve their scoring issues up front, but it would give them one of the best defensive groups in the league.

No one has a clue what Lou Lamoriello is planning, but it would not shock anyone to see him make a splash after standing pat this offseason.
