The Dallas Stars signed free agent defenceman Colin Miller to a two-year contract worth $3.7 million, or $1.85 million per season. This contract carries him through the 2023-24 season.

Over his seven-year NHL career,  Miller has played for the Boston Bruins, Vegas Golden Knights and Buffalo Sabres. He has put up 29 goals and 107 assists for 136 career points in 387 career games. The Los Angeles Kings originally drafted Miller in the fifth round, 151st overall of the 2012 NHL Draft.

Last season he scored two goals and 12 assists for 14 points in 38 games. He also added 21 penalty minutes during the 2021-22 campaign. His possession numbers were 48.7 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of 1.1.

Miller was limited due to injuries during the last season with the Sabres. The Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario native even had surgery during January, but returned in March. However, Miller was a healthy scratch later in the season because the Sabres went younger on the back end. The debut of players like Owen Power may have pushed Miller out of the lineup.

He did help Team Canada win a gold medal at the 2021 IIHF World Championships. Miller was a standout player with his hometown Soo Greyhounds of the OHL and had a 19-goal season with the Manchester Monarchs of the AHL.

What This Means for the Future

The soon-to-be 30-year-old averaged almost 19 minutes a game when he was on the ice. He did log 50 hits in just his 38 games played last season. Miller can still be a useful blueliner in the right situation.

He may not be a top-pair defenceman anymore, but he can help fill out the depth on a team that needs him. Miller did put up a 10-goal season in 2017-18 with the Golden Knights. He won’t give you that many goals, but can chip in an occasional one.
