Seattle NHL Expansion Team to Begin GM Search in Spring 2019

With a potential Seattle franchise in the NHL looming around, the team is already looking into hiring management positions. Although the league has yet approved or even granted the city a team, the group pushing is wasting no time.

Seattle To Kick-Off GM search in 2019

According to Dave Tippett, senior advisor of the team, the group will begin their search for a general manager in spring 2019.

On a radio interview with local Seattle station 950 KJR Tippett commented on the situation. “I think it happens probably around the draft next year – a year out. Vegas hired George McPhee about 15 months out from when they started.” Also adding, “We’ll have a good list of candidates. Some may be working through the draft with the team. There might be somebody available before that. We’ll see how it goes, but by next spring we’ll start digging into that.” Tippett seems adamant about having a GM in place by the 2019 NHL Draft.

According to Sports Illustrated staff writer Alex Prewitt, Tippett also wants to start looking for scouts after closing in on a GM decision for Seattle.

The Future for Seattle

While a franchise still has not gotten a green light from the league, Tippett seems hopeful that it will soon. Still waiting for approval, Seattle is not going to waste any time. With an NHL Board of Governors meeting to take place in October, the situation will be brought up. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly has hinted that an inaugural season is more likely to happen in the 2021-22 season. Construction on an arena will not start until a green light is given.
