Paris Saint-Germain have signed Monaco’s Kylian Mbappé on a season-long loan deal, with an option to sign the striker permanently at the end of the season. Should they undertake their option to sign him permanently at the end of the season, the 18-year-old will join on a four-year deal.
UEFA Financial Fair Play rules have prevented the French side from signing Mbappé on a permanent basis this summer, due to their world-record acquisition of Neymar, meaning an initial loan deal has been made instead. The Brazilian’s arrival is believed to be the pivotal factor in Mbappé’s decision to remain in France; the chance to play alongside the star was too good an offer to refuse.
PSG have beaten off competition from a host of Europe’s biggest clubs for Mbappe’s signature, with the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Arsenal all registering their interest in the Frenchman over the summer.
After the departure of a number of key players, Monaco insisted last month that there would be no more departures at the club, but the £166 million offer was too good to turn down, and will make the Frenchman the second most expensive player if it goes through after the loan deal finishes.
Mbappé enjoyed great success last season, scoring 26 goals in 44 appearances as Monaco won the title, as well as reaching the final of the French League Cup, and semi-final of the Champions League. His performances were recognised as he was awarded a place in the Ligue 1 Team of the Season and the Champions League Squad of the Season.
Monaco have wasted no time in replacing Mbappé, with Inter Milan striker Stevan Jovetic joining the club from Inter Milan. The Montenegro international takes the number 10 shirt from the departing player.
