Leicester in ‘Advanced Talks’ with ‘Culture Architect’ and Expected to sell Trio

Following the confirmation of Leicester’s relegation, on that dismal evening at the King Power, supporters have been braced for a tough future. Several players are set to leave, well-documented financial issues, and a clear struggle to find the right manager. They thought they had it back in 2024 with Enzo Maresca. They did, but it was ultimately too good to be true, as he departed after one season. Since then, four permanent managers have come into the hot seat, all of which failed. With their second-ever season in League One on the horizon, could the long-standing links with a well-renowned manager finally come to fruition?

Major Updates for Leicester with Managerial target Confirmed

Russell Martin: Next Leicester Boss?

In news that seemingly came out of nowhere, John Percy reported that Russell Martin is in advanced talks with Leicester City. Martin’s last job was up in Scotland, where he was hounded out after just a few months. Ironically, Leicester academy player Henry Cartwright put the nail in the coffin with a wonderful effort to steal a point for Falkirk against his Rangers side. Since then, the 40-year-old hasn’t been in work, though he was a leading candidate for the Foxes vacancy when Marti Cifuentes was sacked.

Whilst Martin hasn’t accepted the job yet, he is said to be Leicester’s prime target. Percy also adds that Leicester have admired him for his style of play; something which has continuously divided opinion. The high-possession way of playing has attracted Leicester owner Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, who may be looking to emulate the success that came under Maresca.

Outside of this, a major revamp of the squad is also on the cards. This isn’t a surprise for anyone, especially after suffering back-to-back relegations. Abdul Fatawu, Ben Nelson and Jannik Vestergaard are all expected to depart this summer. Fatawu and Nelson, both 22 years old, will be sellable assets and are likely to have aspirations that far exceed playing League One football.

How Does This Affect Leicester?

It felt almost certain that Leicester would one day end up with Martin as manager. He plays an attractive style of football, came from Southampton, and has always been linked. He’s a divisive figure, and someone many City supporters would have previously turned their nose up at. However, in the third tier, and with a young group of players, the premise of him leading the squad seems slightly better.

Just two years ago, he gained promotion with Southampton. One year ago, he became Rangers boss. There’s clearly something there that is attracting these owners, though Leicester may be the next side to face the repercussions of this experiment. Upon arriving at Ibrox, Rangers CEO Patrick Stewart had his own glowing review of Martin. “Russell shows great leadership; he is a culture architect, so he is somebody we think will come in and really drive standards,” he said.

However, it’s also important to note that he was relieved of his duties in both Southampton and Glasgow due to poor performances. It’s one thing to have a nice style of play, but does it breed success? After two years of picking the right manager, the hierarchy must get this decision right.

As for the trio of departures, it doesn’t really come as a surprise. Fatawu will be a target for a plethora of clubs, especially with the World Cup coming up. If he has a strong tournament with Ghana, or even impresses against England, the interest could increase even more. Vestergaard is someone who may leave due to high wages. For many, his exit would be welcomed, and a way of starting fresh at the back. Meanwhile, Nelson could also be heading for the exit door, which will be a shame given his potential. Manchester United have already been linked, whilst Chelsea were previously interested.
