Tottenham Appoint Igor Tudor as Interim Manager: A Look at What He Brings

Igor Tudor has agreed to join Tottenham Hotspur as interim manager until the summer. The 47-year-old Croatian brings experience to a squad low on confidence and in poor form. With Tottenham just five points above 18th-placed West Ham, the challenge is clear for Tudor — securing Premier League survival. With Arsenal next up, supporters will hope the new manager can provide a boost and halt their rivals.

What Igor Tudor Will Bring to Tottenham

Why Igor Tudor?

When Thomas Frank was sacked on Wednesday, numerous candidates were being linked with the job. Tudor’s experience in similar situations may have helped him land the role. Towards the end of the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons, the Croatian joined struggling Lazio and Juventus respectively. On both occasions, Tudor took charge of nine matches — winning five, drawing three and losing just one.

In contrast to Frank, Tudor has typically favoured an aggressive pressing structure, most often deploying a 3-4-2-1 system. He represents a brand of football much closer to what Tottenham supporters favour. Clubs tend to hire young coaches with potential as interim managers, such as Michael Carrick at Manchester United. Tudor, however, lists 10 clubs on his CV, a clear indication of the seriousness of Spurs’ current predicament.

Sitting 16th in the Premier League table, Spurs will be banking on that experience to maintain their top-flight status.

Is this a Risk?

Tudor’s managerial career has been eventful, yet his career moves suggest he brings risk. Having never stayed longer than two years at a club, he left Marseille with a fractured relationship and was sacked by Juventus this season, leaving the club eighth in Serie A.

While his offensive style is likely to endear him to supporters, the aggressive pressing is demanding on players. Already in the midst of an injury crisis, Spurs can ill afford further setbacks under such an intense system. His reliance on wing-backs is already under threat. First choices Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro are currently injured, an instant blight on Tudor’s system.

What This Means for Tottenham’s Future

Regardless of what Igor Tudor will bring to Tottenham, the only necessity is avoiding relegation. Tudor’s contract runs until June, meaning Spurs will be planning their next appointment. While Tudor has a chance to earn a claim at the permanent position, names such as Mauricio Pochettino, Xavi, Robbie Keane and Roberto De Zerbi are being linked.

Tudor’s job is to bring stability. His track record suggests a good fit to the situation. The stakes are significant — if he succeeds, Tottenham will approach their next managerial appointment with clarity. If results do not improve, Tottenham could face a genuine relegation battle heading into the final weeks of the season.
