Reliable Journalist Names Main ‘Contender’ to Replace Enzo Maresca at Chelsea

With Enzo Maresca’s departure, the rumour mill is going to swirl as Chelsea look to find a new head coach. Amid all of that, one reliable journalist has named his “contender” who could replace the Italian in the Stamford Bridge dugout in just a few days.

David Ornstein Names Likely Enzo Maresca Replacement, Rules Out Oliver Glanser

Current Contender

David Ornstein’s latest indicates that he believes Liam Rosenior is a “contender” while also ruling out Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner. Rosenior used to manage in the EFL Championship but has been at the helm of sister club Strasbourg in Ligue 1 since last term. He got the previously wayward side to a European position but has struggled for consistency in this campaign, still sitting 7th despite some big spending over the summer that should have strengthened the squad.

This would be in line with recent appointments as he does like to play with the ball and control it in games, similar to Maresca and previous BlueCo appointment Graham Potter.

Quick Turnaround

With matches coming thick and fast over the Winter period, Ornstein notes that the club want to make a decision pretty swiftly with the process expected to take a few days, likely meaning the Manchester City clash will have an interim coach in charge. This will be a crucial decision, particularly with Glasner being ruled out as he has won trophies with Crystal Palace, something that’s made him an attractive name in the current pool.

There are big shoes to fill and a big step up to be made if the Strasbourg manager does make the step up to the Blues. He will have to immediately contend with a Carabao Cup semi-final, the Champions League, and steadying the ship in the Premier League where Chelsea are currently clinging to a spot in the top five.
