This is an Everton predicted lineup for their EFL Cup tie with Wolves in Round Three. A decent start to the season couldn’t help out the Toffees as they fell to a 2-1 defeat to their local rivals Liverpool at the weekend. With that behind them they will be hoping to get something here and continue their run in the cup. It should be tough as the Wanderers are on 0 points in the league and need something to turn their momentum around.
Everton Predicted Lineup vs Wolves for September 23
How Everton Have Lined Up Recently
Jordan Pickford is unsurprisingly the number one option in goal, he only rotates out for cup competitions but may stay in for an all-top-division fixture. The back line has been forced to use a slim selection due to injuries with Michael Keane and James Tarkowski as the centre-back pairing in every fixture so far. Jake O’Brien has made the right-back spot his own as Seamus Coleman’s role reduces. At left back, Vitalii Mykolenko is the preferred option but injuries have forced James Garner to play there.

With Garner sometimes moved out of the pivot we have seen Idrissa Gueye partner with Tim Iroegbunam more often than not in the defensive midfield spots. The first-choice pairing is Gueye and Garner as evidenced by this weekend’s selection.

Jack Grealish has been a constant starter since his loan move with summer addition Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall making his mark as the number ten. Illiman Ndiaye has taken one for the team and switched from operating on the left wing to playing on the right.
Up front there was an expectation that there’d be a bit of a striking battle but Beto has started more often than not. Thierno Barry has so far been used as a substitute but did start in the second round win over Mansfield.
Everton Recent Form & Tactics
David Moyes has used a 4-2-3-1 since his return to the club. It allows for a defensive pairing in midfield to shield the back line while the front four can try to counter-press and win the ball in advantageous areas. It’s not fully a setup where they sit back and soak pressure, instead prioritising solid defending while also looking to manufacture counter-attacking opportunities.

The team currently sit in the middle of the table but have scored wins over Wolves and Brighton while also nabbing a draw with Aston Villa. It is fairly solid start to life with the defeat to Leeds coming before they added Grealish and Dewsbury-Hall was adjusting, since then they’ve looked a bit better going forward.
Everton Injuries to Consider
According to PremierInjuries there are just two players on the sidelines. Jarrad Branthwaite appears to be nearing a return but won’t be ready to go just yet. Merlin Rohl is the only other absentee. Nathan Patterson, who had been out with an injury was on the bench against Liverpool, marking his return.
Everton Predicted Lineup vs Wolverhampton Wanderers
The trouble here will be resting some of the key players while retaining enough quality to beat a Premier League side. Moyes should have the experience and know-how to pull it off though.
