Newcastle United yoane wissa transfer

Newcastle United ‘Will Progress’ On ‘Unconventional’ Forward as £30 Million ‘Could Be Enough’

Eddie Howe had an exceptionally successful 2024/25 season, ending a 56-year trophy drought in the Tyneside with a Carabao Cup, alongside a top-five finish to secure Champions League football for the following year. Now, the Magpies look to build on their success and continue to disrupt the Big Six hierarchy. Newcastle United’s attempt to sign Yoane Wissa from Brentford is set to progress.

Newcastle United Could Secure Yoane Wissa for £30 Million With Deal Set to Progress

Personal Terms ‘Would Be No Problem’

Craig Hope, of the Daily Mail, has revealed that there is “confidence among sources close” that a deal for Wissa to join Newcastle “will progress”. This comes as good news for fans after David Ornstein, of The Athletic, reported earlier that they had a £25 million offer rejected by Brentford.

Hope understands that a fee in the region of just £30 million “could be enough” to secure the “unconventional” forward’s services. This may come as a surprise given that the Bees have just lost their other key player, Bryan Mbeumo, to Manchester United, as well as losing manager Thomas Frank to Tottenham Hotspur this summer. One might have expected Brentford to demand a higher fee, especially after watching Newcastle bid £70 million for their other striker target, Hugo Ekitike.

Is Wissa a Long-Term or Short-Term Signing?

Newcastle’s interest in 23-year-old Hugo Ekitike suggested that they were preparing for the departure of Alexander Isak in the long-term. However, it was then revealed that Howe intended to play Isak and Ekitike together.

An interest in 28-year-old Wissa seems to confirm this: he is likely not the long-term replacement should Isak leave. Therefore, it appears that Newcastle want to play with a two-up-top system this coming campaign; Wissa is merely just a signing to bolster the current team, rather than a piece of a wider puzzle that includes the future of their Swedish striker.
