How Aston Villa Have Lined-up Recently

Villa were unchanged for their clash with Newcastle on Boxing Day following their impressive victory over Manchester City five days prior. Emi Martinez began in goal, with Matty Cash, Ezri Konsa, Pau Torres and Lucas Digne making up the back four. Boubacar Kamara and Amadou Onana sat in front of the defence, while John McGinn, Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers supported Jhon Duran up front, who entered the Newcastle clash with a goal in each of his previous three matches.

Aston Villa Recent Form and Tactics

Sticking with the 4-2-3-1 formation and going unchanged for two games in a row looked in hindsight like the best decision from Unai Emery, but at 17:00 on Boxing Day, he’d have been wondering whether it really was the right thing to do.

Two minutes into the game against the Magpies and Villa were dealt a killer blow as Anthony Gordon gave Eddie Howe’s side the lead. Things went from bad to worse for the visitors on the half hour mark when Duran was controversially given his marching orders by Anthony Taylor for a stamp on the back of Fabian Schar, giving Emery’s crew a mountain to climb. Alexander Isak made it 2-0 on 59 minutes and in the dying minutes of the game, Joelinton made it three to hand Villa their fifth consecutive away defeat of the season and their fourth Boxing Day loss in a row.

Villa attempted to get Duran’s red card overturned after the game, but the FA rejected their appeal, meaning the Colombian will now miss the Brighton clash and games against Leicester and Everton, with “star” man Ollie Watkins likely to return for his league start since December 4.

Jacob Ramsey is back in training following a hamstring injury layoff, with the Athletic’s Aston Villa writer Jacob Tanswell reporting Emery’s words that the young Englishman could finally be in line for a return to action against the Seagulls. Along with Duran’s three-match ban, Emery will also be without Cash, who will serve a one-match suspension following the accumulation of his fifth yellow card of the campaign against Newcastle.
