Manchester United are looking for ways to strengthen their squad going forward to ensure that head coach Ruben Amorim gets enough firepower to get the team challenging for top trophies as soon as possible. Fabrizio Romano has given his “here we go” to report that United have sealed a verbal agreement with Paraguayan top division club Cerro Porteno to sign the 17-year-old Paraguayan left-back in 2025. The rules for Premier League clubs buying foreign players mean that he will only be able to complete the transfer in June 2025 once he turns 18.

It’s also stated that they will be paying a fee of around £3.9 million (including add-ons) and over £2.7 million in performance-based add-ons.
Romano has also claimed that the deal was looked after by their technical director Jason Wilcox, who has assumed a major role in transfers after the shock exit of Dan Ashworth from Old Trafford vacating the sporting director role.Leon has never played in Europe, but will venture on a new journey in his career next summer.
What Can Diego Leon Bring To United?
The 17-year-old has managed to impress scouts with his performances for the Paraguayan top division club, as he’s made 20 appearances for Cerro Porteno so far in his career and also managed to score two goals. Even though he’s never played for Paraguay’s youth teams or in Europe, Leon has earned praise from those who have followed him closely.
ESPN’s Paraguay football expert Roberto Rojas has a lot of praise for him, as he stated: “He’s a player with a lot of promise, who happened to make this big jump into the first team at Cerro Porteño so quickly. He’s definitely viewed highly because of his talent and recent performances for one of the biggest clubs in the country and occupying that left flank as a full-back has allowed him to be someone who can go onto the attack, start playing from the back and also be versatile.”

The Red Devils have invested in multiple promising young talents in 2024, having also signed former Arsenal youngster Chido Obi-Martin and young Mali midfielder Sekou Kone, as they’ll hope Leon turns out to be a solid investment and can improve their left-back spot in the near future.
