The Telegraph’s Matt Law has reported that the Blues do not expect their captain to return before the end of December (2024) at the earliest after discovering the extent of his newest hamstring injury picked up in training. While Chelsea are still waiting on the final test results, James is expected to miss a large chunk of action and may be sidelined until after the new year, depending on recovery time.

Law adds that Chelsea are eager to help their full-back in any way possible to speed his recovery. This includes not only giving him the best rehabilitation care but also supporting James’ mental health after yet another injury; The journalist also states that the London giants will not put any pressure on the star to return to action, minimising any focus on a return date.

Ahead of Chelsea’s upcoming UEFA Conference League clash against Heidenheim, Enzo Maresca gave an update on James: “Yes [he’s had a scan]. The only thing we can say is that he is getting better day by day. We don’t know how many days he needs. He’s getting better.”

James has had a torrid time dealing with injuries and fitness issues in recent years. He’s already missed 13 matches so far in the 2024/25 season because of his injury troubles. Last season, he missed 38 games. The 24-year-old, who is rumoured to be earning a £250,000-a-week wage package at Stamford Bridge, has made just four appearances for the Blues so far this season.
