FPL Tips: Three Defenders to Transfer in for Gameweek 5 Including ‘Indispensable’ Full-Back

The Premier League returns with a set of fixtures where attack-minded defenders might be the best bet for FPL players. Last Word on Football brings you three defenders who should feature in your Gameweek 5 squad, with the FPL deadline set for 11:00 AM BST on September 21.

Three Defenders to Transfer in for FPL Gameweek 5

Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m)

Virgil van Dijk has had a stunning start to the new season, with three clean sheets in four games. The Liverpool captain has led his defence admirably and will have no problem dealing with Bournemouth on Saturday. He is among the top-scoring defenders in FPL with 20 points and should be able to add more this weekend.

The rest of the Liverpool defence and keeper Alisson Becker have made Van Dijk’s job easier. They have been performing well as a unit and a clean sheet looks more than probable. Manager Arne Slot will hope the result against Nottingham Forest was nothing more than a blip.

Pedro Porro (£5.5m)

Tottenham Hotspur fullback Pedro Porro has flourished under Ange Postecoglou. Last season, he scored three goals and assisted eight, while he has scored one this season.

Against Brentford on Saturday, Porro should have more joy in terms of attacking. The Bees have conceded goals in all four league games and look set to continue that form against Spurs. This will provide Postecoglou’s men with confidence to persist with their attacking high line throughout the game and put pressure on the opposition’s defence.

A game between Spurs and Brentford promises to provide goals, with the last four meetings witnessing a total of 17. Porro can be expected to be instrumental in making one for his team.

Lucas Digne (£4.6m) – A Cost-Effective Option for Gameweek 5

Lucas Digne has been Aston Villa’s best defender if one considers the FPL points scored. He has received 15 points in total despite not keeping a clean sheet this season. His attacking output has been great, and he has two assists in four games. He created Villa’s first goal against Everton last week to kickstart a stunning comeback.

Digne received two bonus points for his display against Leicester City, indicating the influence he had on the game. Against Wolverhampton Wanderers, the Frenchman should have more joy attacking as Villa look to consolidate their place in the top four.

For a player of Digne’s quality and experience, £4.6m appears to be a bargain. FPL contestants should try to make the indispensable defender a part of their team now before good performances shoot his price up and make him unaffordable.
