What Did Erik ten Hag Have to Say?

Ugarte was unveiled at Old Trafford in the Red Devils’ disastrous 3-0 loss to Liverpool before the international break, but couldn’t play in that game due to a lack of fitness levels. However, it appears that might not be the case anymore after he played a couple of games for Uruguay during the break period.

Erik ten Hag delivered an update on the status of the 23-year-old midfielder before the trip to Southampton, saying: “Manuel Ugarte, you will have seen he played for Uruguay, he returned this afternoon [Thursday], he was the only player who returned today, the rest yesterday, so he is available for this game.”

Not just that, but the Dutch gaffer also delivered an update on the situation of injured players Rasmus Hojlund and Luke Shaw. He added: “Rasmus Hojlund and Luke Shaw are progressing very well but not ready.”

Where Can Manuel Ugarte Slot Into United Squad?

A lot of Manchester United fans could actually be eager to see the Uruguayan midfielder make his debut for them against the Saints after the way in which Casemiro performed in the loss to Liverpool. The Brazilian midfielder was extremely error-prone in the game and was taken off at half-time, and that could be a potential reason for Ten Hag to rush Ugarte into the team for the upcoming game.

The Uruguay international has been brought in to play in that no.6 role at Old Trafford and perhaps allow more freedom to fellow midfielders Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes. He had a busy outing for his national team in the international break and was also hailed for an “exceptional” moment in a recent 0-0 draw against Venezuela. It now remains to be seen if Ugarte actually starts the game after his high-profile move from PSG on deadline day.
