How Manchester United Have Lined-up Recently

Manchester United have started the season in Erik ten Hag’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, with André Onana in goal.

In defence, new signings Noussair Mazraoui and Portuguese international Diogo Dalot have been the starting full-backs, with Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez the starting centre-back partnership so far this season.

Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo have been the anchors in midfield, with Amad, Mason Mount and Marcus Rashford behind false nine Bruno Fernandes, who has been deputising in the advanced role in the absence of Rasmus Hojlund.

Manchester United Recent Form and Tactics

After the Community Shield defeat to Manchester City, Manchester United have a win and a loss to their name in the two Premier League fixtures, an opening day victory against Fulham and a last-minute away loss to Brighton last time out.

Despite a mixed bag of results, there seems to be more coherence in the way they have set up this season, with Mount and Fernandes having been instrumental in the Red Devils’ improved pressing structure, evident even in the defeat to Brighton last weekend.

With Casemiro seemingly in better shape and back to the kind of form that convinced Manchester United to shell out £70 million to Real Madrid for his services, there is a defensive solidity to the team that was sorely lacking last season. The 4-2-3-1 system is paying dividends with a solid defensive pairing and an active trio behind the striker.

Injuries to Consider

Mount has sustained a thigh injury that will keep him out for several weeks, adding himself to a busy Manchester United treatment room. Defenders Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof are expected to be out until mid-September with calf and ankle injuries respectively, whilst Rasmus Hojlund is not expected back until the end of the month with a thigh injury. Tyrell Malacia (Knee) and Lény Yoro (Ankle) are longer-term absentees.
