West Ham are reportedly interested in Chelsea’s Carney Chukwuemeka, who Manchester United were reported to be monitoring earlier today.

Mike McGrath has revealed that West Ham are “trying for a deal” for Chukwuemeka. They would sign the midfielder on loan, though would face tough competition from Manchester United who are also exploring the deal – per Dharmesh Sheth.

There are “other clubs also interested”, but McGrath reveals that it will ultimately come down to whether Chelsea want to let him leave for the season. In theory, with such a large squad, the Blues should be content with losing Chukwuemeka on loan.

Where Does Carney Chukwuemeka Fit in at West Ham?

West Ham have bolstered their squad this summer, making it difficult to see where the 20-year-old would fit in. So far, Julen Lopetegui has lined up with a 4-3-3. Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen have occupied the wings, whilst Crysencio Summerville eagerly waits on the touchline, ruling out minutes out wide for Chukwuemeka.

Lucas Paqueta takes the creative role in midfield and would never be displaced. However, he could see a footballing ban in the future, as he is under investigation. Aside from this, Chukwuemeka could displace Tomas Soucek, though the Hammers would be losing a very strong physical presence in the midfield.

The most likely situation is that Aston Villa academy graduate plays a squad role, rotating in and playing minutes off the bench. He is an extremely talented player and we saw this at Chelsea; it is no wonder he is branded as a “wonderkid”. He would be a great squad addition, though it seems unlikely that West Ham would be able to negotiate a buy option into the package.
