Wolves 'Close to Agreement' for Cheap Aaron Ramsdale Alternative

Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) are reportedly making an effort to sign Sam Johnstone from Crystal Palace. This comes after links of an Aaron Ramsdale transfer to Wolves which seems less likely now.

Negotiations Towards Fee of £10 Million

David Ornstein has revealed that Wolves are “close to reaching agreement” with Crystal Palace for their now second-choice goalkeeper. Negotiations are working towards a fee of around £10 million, which seems a cheap deal for an experienced player who started 22 matches last season.

The England international is set to sign a lengthy four-year contract until 2028, which may seem a bit excessive given his age is 31-years-old. His current manager, Oliver Glasner, revealed that the player “told us he wants to leave” after playing zero minutes so far this season. Dean Henderson appears to have usurped the Manchester United academy graduate.

Aaron Ramsdale to Wolves Off?

This potential signing would surely see the end of Wolves’ pursuit of a Ramsdale transfer. Gary O’Neil clearly wants a new number one, given their intense interest in the Arsenal goalkeeper, and Johnstone is a very capable player.

It does seem strange that the Old Gold would displace Jose Sa with this potential signing, but it seems likely that Johnstone is the alternative to Ramsdale as Wolves want a loan with option to buy whilst Arsenal want an obligation.

It would be even more strange if they signed Johnstone and Ramsdale with Sa still at the club. It would be unlikely for them to continue after the 26-year-old before Deadline Day. However, his departure from the Emirates still seems imminent as Mikel Arteta looks to secure the signature of Joan Garcia.
