How Liverpool Have Lined-up Recently

Liverpool have lined up with a 4-2-3-1 under Arne Slot in all of their pre-season matches, except against Real Betis when they had no available strikers.

On August 11, the Reds played friendlies against both Sevilla and Las Palmas, though the lineup for the former seems to be closer to their actual first-choice team. Alisson Becker started in goal, with Virgil van Dijk and Jarell Quansah the centre-backs. Kostas Tsimikas was the left-back with Trent Alexander-Arnold on the right.

Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch were the holding-midfielders, with Dominik Szoboszlai playing more advanced. Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah were Slot’s wingers, with Diogo Jota his centre-forward.

Liverpool’s Recent Form and Tactics

Liverpool have played very well in pre-season and have been rewarded with a record of four wins and one draw. They beat strong sides in Real Betis, Arsenal, Manchester United, and Sevilla. Their 0-0 draw with Las Palmas came just two and a half hours after the Sevilla match, with a weakened side.

A lot of Liverpool’s starters didn’t really feature in pre-season as they had extended summer breaks due to their participation in either the Euros or the Copa America. Therefore, a lot of the standout performers were fringe players. Fabio Carvalho’s performances earned him a £27.5 million move to Brentford, whilst Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott looked sharp. Jarell Quansah’s minutes may see him start the first couple of Premier League matches this season.

Tactically, the 4-2-3-1 (particularly the double-pivot) provided a very stable base that limited the success of both Arsenal and United’s attacks. Fans are confident heading into the season.

When asked whether he has a fully fit squad, Slot replied: “Yes we have”. However, Andy Robertson only made his first squad appearance this pre-season a week ago. We expect Tsimikas to start this match.
