Manchester United Add Premier League 'Veteran' to Transfer List After Huge Injury Blow

Manchester United have been very active in the 2024 summer transfer window and have confirmed the signings of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich before their 2024/25 Premier League opener against Fulham. It appears that they are now in the market for a left-back and eyeing ex-Chelsea star Marcos Alonso.

The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell has reported that the Red Devils are actively looking to sign a new left-back even though Mazraoui can play in that position too. He states that they have discussed the possibility of signing former Barcelona full-back Marcos Alonso after seeing him become a free agent in the summer window.

Alonso can be roped in on a free transfer, which would be ideal for the Red Devils after they already spent big money on signing multiple players this summer. Erik ten Hag is also a bit short-staffed at the left-back position after his side confirmed a new injury blow for Luke Shaw. The English left-back has reportedly picked up a new calf injury that will keep him out for United’s first three matches of the 2024/25 Premier League season. The club have confirmed that he is working on returning to action after the September 2024 international break.

What Can Marcos Alonso Bring to Old Trafford?

The “veteran” can actually be a smart signing for the Red Devils. He has plenty of experience of playing in the Premier League as he spent seven years at Stamford Bridge and also won the 2016/17 title with them. The Spaniard made 212 appearances for the Blues and had the reputation for being a creative, attack-minded full-back who also scored 29 goals and provided 20 assists across all competitions for the London club.

The 33-year-old was allowed to become a free agent by Barcelona and is yet to have signed for any club. That is why United are potentially looking into signing him as an emergency option to fix their woes in the left-back area. This is also due to Tyrell Malacia being extremely injury-prone and not playing any matches in over a year for the club. Shaw has not played a match since February 2024 for the Red Devils and missed 34 games across all competitions last season due to injuries.
