Liverpool Exploring Transfer for ‘Rodri Understudy’

£52 Million-Rated Midfielder Rejects Liverpool to Stay Put

Liverpool are finally looking to do some business in the transfer market, as they are reported to have an interest in Martin Zubimendi. The 25-year-old plays as a defensive midfielder for Real Sociedad.

Liverpool Identify Martin Zubimendi as Number Six Solution

Move Complicated By Release Clause

Liverpool have expressed interest in Martin Zubimendi, as reported by David Ornstein. The Spanish international typically operates as a ‘number six’ and has a £52 million release clause, which could need to be paid in full if the selling club are not willing to negotiate.

Zubimendi has previously been linked with Arsenal and Barcelona, but Real Sociedad are prepared to be tough in negotiations. They may be unwilling to let the midfielder go for below the asking fee, with fellow midfielder Mikel Merino linked to Arsenal. Furthermore, previous suitors have failed to attract him away from Sociedad.

The player was part of Spain’s Euro 2024 winning squad, playing one match, where he was largely an “understudy to Rodri”. His style of play has also drawn comparisons to Xabi Alonso, who previously worked with Zubimendi at Sociedad.

Liverpool have been actively pursuing a defensive midfielder, with Arne Slot having identified it as a key position. During pre-season, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo were both trialled in this position. Alexis Mac Allister is also yet to return to the squad after international duty.

What Will Martin Zubimendi Bring to Liverpool?

Zubimendi is a traditional holding midfielder and would provide defensive cover to allow Mac Allister more creative freedom. Liverpool have struggled to fill this gap in the squad since Fabinho departed to Al Ittihad in 2023.

The Reds signed Wataru Endo last year after the failed pursuits of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia. However, the Japanese international has been linked with a move away from Anfield.

Zubimendi started 29 league matches for Sociedad last season, scoring four times. He was particularly strong at winning aerial duels and clearances, showcasing his ability to act as a defensive anchor. The Spaniard will hope to rival Gravenberch and Endo for this position and would arrive off the back of a strong season. He will also help Stefan Bajcetic’s development as his compatriot looks to break into Liverpool’s first team.

Will Liverpool Manage to Complete the Signing?

Slot has kept his cards close to his chest so far this transfer window and Zubimendi is the first midfielder that Liverpool have actively chased. Their current midfield options are depleted following Thiago’s departure at the end of last season.

However, Real Sociedad will demand a high fee. Robin Le Normand has already left, so they will be eager to retain as much of their squad as possible for the near future. Slot is keeping his options open, and talks are yet to advance. Therefore, Liverpool could look elsewhere should this signing prove too difficult.
