Fabrizio Romano gave the all-important “Here We Go” for Olmo’s transfer this afternoon (August 6), with Barcelona agreeing a guaranteed fee of £47 million plus £6 million in add-ons for the player who signs a six-year deal. The deal was officially brokered by Barca director Deco who travelled to Leipzig to secure the 26-year-old’s signature following his impressive performances in Germany at Euro 2024.

Olmo’s Spain Performances Will Have Put Barcelona on High Alert

Despite hitting just eight goals and notching five assists in all competitions for Leipzig in 2023/24, the “star” was rewarded with a spot in Spain’s Euro 2024 squad by manager Luis de la Fuente, whom the midfielder played under for his country’s U21 team and also the 2020 Olympics side. He won the 2019 Euros and silver medal match respectively.

From the tournament’s first whistle in Germany this summer, Spain planted their flag as the team to beat, beating Croatia, Italy and Albania in the groups – scoring five goals and conceding zero. They then dismantled Georgia, edged past Germany and then France in the knockouts, leading up to the final where they came through 2-1 against England to win their fourth European Championship.

While Rodri took all the plaudits as the Euros’ Player of the Tournament, Olmo was arguably his nation’s next-best player, finishing as the joint-top scorer in Germany with three goals (all of them coming in the knockout phase) and accumulating two assists, a total only beaten by Xavi Simons and Lamine Yamal.

His ability to carry the ball forward and pick out passes was clear for all to see as rumours around his future began to take shape during the tournament; Barcelona saw a moment and took it, fending off serious interest from European rivals to seal the deal.

The Blaugrana are adding Olmo to a midfield and attacking cohort that includes the likes of Gavi, Pedri, Yamal, Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski. New manager Hansi Flick certainly won’t be losing any sleep over whether or not his side will be able to create chances and score goals whenever they’re in possession, no matter what area of the pitch they find themselves in.
