‘This Move Is a Dream Come True’: Latest Chelsea Signing Reacts to Transfer

Chelsea have confirmed they’ve made a significant signing between the sticks. Danish international Filip Jørgensen has joined the Blues for a fee of £20.7m from Spanish outfit Villarreal, marking consecutive summers in which Chelsea have moved in the goalkeeper market.

Details of the Deal

The Danish goalkeeper has signed a contract for seven years, similar to the length of the other goalkeeper contracts in the squad. The 22 year old has spoken on the move to Chelsea: “This move is a dream come true. I am very excited to have signed for Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world. I can’t wait to get to know everyone and to start playing with all my new teammates.”

Jørgensen is expected to compete with Robert Sanchez for the number one spot throughout the 2024/25 campaign. As a result of his arrival, Djordje Petrovic could leave despite his solid performances last season.

Filip Jørgensen Profile

Filip Jørgensen is an excellent ball-playing goalkeeper who is more than adept at playing out the back. Therefore, the Danish international makes a perfect fit for Maresca’s system.

However, question marks still remain over other key attributes. Most notably, Jørgensen’s shot-stopping ability and command of his box are still suspect. Many key stats reflect this uncertainty. For example, as per FBref, he conceded the most goals out of any goalkeeper in La Liga last season.

He made the most saves in the league, suggesting that his defence didn’t do him any favours in preventing the opposition from threatening the goal. Additionally, Jørgensen is only 22 with lots of room to grow and develop into a more reliable shot-stopper.

Chelsea’s Goalkeeper Uncertainties

Chelsea will hope that Jørgensen can settle the uncertainty surrounding the goalkeeper position that has persisted since Edouard Mendy’s decline. The Blues have spent nearly a combined £60 million on the likes of Sanchez, Petrovic, and Jørgensen without having a clear answer regarding who the club’s long-term number one is. With a healthy competition brewing between them, Chelsea may finally find that goalkeeping answer soon.
