‘Green Light’ from Manchester United

Fans were initially shocked that United had even allowed the player to stay at the club following his scandal. It is not surprising that the hierarchy are now ready to cut ties with the player, and this green light was likely given rather easily.

A Healthy Profit

Romano has already given his Here We Go, meaning that all the transfer is waiting on is the medical. He also reported that United would receive a healthy €30 million package, which would be pure profit as the player is an academy graduate. This will certainly help them abide by the Profitability and Sustainability rules; they are about to spend £50 million on Leny Yoro.

There is also a huge 50% sell-on clause. Should Greenwood reach his previous heights as a “special talent”, the Red Devils should make even more of a healthy profit. This deal does seem like a no-brainer for the selling club: removing a problematic player, turning a big profit, and benefitting from any sharp upturns in his form.

Greenwood spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Getafe, in La Liga. He received a very warm welcome and rewarded them with an impressive ten goals and six assists. He did not quite show the levels that he had once reached in the Premier League, as arguably the most exciting talent in England, but this was a strong season.

Marseille finished eighth in Ligue 1 last season; Greenwood could take a starring role and propel the club to a higher finish in 2024/25. He is an ideal replacement for the similarly speedy and prolific Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who is set to depart.
