A Shocking U-Turn

After entering negotiations with the club last month, Rangnick quickly emerged as the main candidate to take charge at Bayern. Talks were repeatedly described as “positive”, with sporting director Christoph Freund hinting that a final agreement could have been reached this week.

However, Rangnick went on to announce his decision to stay as Austria’s manager on Thursday, saying (via iMiaSanMia): “I’m the Austrian team coach with all my heart. I really enjoy this task and am determined to successfully continue on our chosen path.”

Bayern’s Manager Search So Far

Rangnick becomes the third manager to decide against completing a move to Allianz Arena ahead of the next season. Since the club announced Tuchel’s sacking in February, they have struggled to find a replacement for the former Chelsea boss.

Xabi Alonso, who was reportedly Bayern’s favourite candidate, announced his decision to stay at Bayer Leverkusen in late March. The Bavarians then entered negotiations with their former manager Julian Nagelsmann. However, he went on to extend his contract with the German national team until after the 2026 World Cup.

Club CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen has already confirmed that keeping Tuchel beyond this season is not an option. Therefore, the Bundesliga giants have to continue their search for a new manager in the coming weeks.

The Remaining Candidates

According to Sky Germany, Rangnick’s decision to stay in charge of Austria forces Bayern to come up with a “plan D” to replace Tuchel as they move away from their favourite candidates.

Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich in the past few months, reportedly holding initial talks over the vacant managerial position. Another target is Stuttgart’s Sebastian Hoeness, who has worked at Allianz Arena as a youth manager before. Rehiring Hansi Flick could also emerge as an emergency option but the manager is reportedly interested in continuing his career abroad.
