West Ham Face Competition For Phillips Signing

Sky Sports has reported that the Hammers are holding discussions with Manchester City over a potential loan move to bring in Phillips until the end of the 2023/24 season. Sky Sports also adds that the talks between the two clubs are currently centred over the specific conditions of any loan deal, and that the Citizens ideally prefer to sell Phillips in January but could be open to a loan deal with the right conditions. It is further claimed that Juventus held initial talks with the Premier League champions for the Englishman’s signing, but it appears that the Hammers are in control right now as they aim to get the deal over the line.

What Has Been Going On With Phillips?

Ever since moving to Manchester City in the summer of 2022, Phillips has struggled to get regular playing time at the domestic level. He has just started six games in all competitions for Pep Guardiola’s side over the last one and a half seasons, which includes just two starts in the 2023/24 season so far.

West Ham seem to be keen on signing him to add more depth to their midfield line ahead of what could be an exhausting second half of the season. The Irons replaced Declan Rice with Eddie Alvarez last summer and also signed James Ward-Prowse from Southampton, but David Moyes knows that he needs more depth in his team to strongly compete in the Premier League and also fight for the UEFA Europa League title. The Manchester City midfielder, who has been hailed as “exceptional” by Guardiola this season, had his breakthrough at Leeds United for whom he made 234 appearances and proved himself as a hard-working, tough-tackling midfielder.
