How Aston Villa Have Lined-Up Recently
Emiliano Martínez is the starting goalkeeper. The in-form Matty Cash has started at right-back, with Ezri Konsa and Pau Torres forming the centre-back partnership. Lucas Digne has performed well at left-back.
In central midfield is a duo of Boubacar Kamara and Douglas Luiz. John McGinn plays as a right wide midfielder in a 4-4-2 system, with Nicolò Zaniolo and Youri Tielemans rotating on the left.
Ollie Watkins, with six goals this season, starts up front alongside Moussa Diaby.

Aston Villa Recent Form and Tactics
Unai Emery’s side have had a strong few weeks, doing the double over AZ Alkmaar in the Europa Conference League and winning two out of their last three Premier League games. In their previous five fixtures in all competitions, they have averaged 2.4 goals a game; their forward line has gelled more as the season has progressed.
In particular, the partnership of Watkins and Diaby has been nothing short of excellent. When Villa signed the Frenchman for £50 million, we all knew he was one of Europe’s most exciting wingers: the 24-year-old managed 24 goal contributions last season. However, Emery has deployed Diaby as a second striker, drifting wide and creating chances for his strike partner. He has been the missing attacking piece the team was seemingly missing to break into the top six.

Interestingly, the Villains were beaten 2-0 at Nottingham Forest two league games ago. This defeat came as a shock to many fans despite their inconsistencies away from home.
However, the scoreline heavily flattered Steve Cooper’s team. The two goals were impressive strikes from outside the box, with Martinez at fault for the second. There were many opportunities – missed by the away side, particularly headers by Watkins and Leon Bailey, and they dominated the game with 74% possession.
Aston Villa Injuries to Consider
Multiple players hold minor injuries and are in doubt for the fixture on Sunday.
McGinn, came back from the international break and only trained with the team on Friday, but Emery says if there are no changes tomorrow: “he will be okay for Sunday”.

Star goalkeeper, Martínez, is returning from Argentina duty with “a little bit of pain,” but the Spanish manager said, “I think he is going to be ready for Sunday”. His replacement would be Robin Olsen, who played in the 3-1 victory over Burnley. Concerningly, the 33-year-old is not at the ideal standard to match the high-quality shots of Son Heung-min.
Reports on Zaniolo and Bailey were “positive”, but the pair are not indispensable, with Tielemans eager for more minutes.
Jacob Ramsey and Diego Carlos have returned to training, but it is unknown – whether they will be fit to start. The returning duo will boost Villa as they head into a busy December.
Tyrone Mings and Emiliano Buendía remain out for the long term.
