‘There Has Been Talk’: Fabrizio Romano Clarifies Liverpool’s Links To Highly-Rated Brazilian ‘Joker’

Liverpool have maintained the best defensive record in the Premier League so far after 12 matches and that has significantly helped them stay afloat in the title race. Despite that, the Reds continue to be linked to defenders and Fabrizio Romano has now opened up on their links to Sao Paulo defender Lucas Beraldo.

Who is Lucas Beraldo?

The 19-year-old centre-back has made his breakthrough for the Brazilian club at a very young age and has earned the nickname of “Joker” for how he appears to brandish a strange smile just before lining up for every game when the national anthem plays.

The teenager is a composed defender and especially calm in distributing the ball around the park. He has already made 43 appearances for Sao Paulo at such a young age after coming through their youth academy, helping them keep seven clean sheets in 23 appearances in the Brazilian top division.

The centre-back is reported to have a £52 million release clause attached to his current deal that shows how highly-rated he is, meaning any club serious about signing him will have to dish out big money to take him away anytime soon.

Are Liverpool Genuinely Interested In Signing Beraldo?

Romano has acknowledged Liverpool’s links to Beraldo and that “there has been talk” over a deal, but insists that he is not aware of any negotiations taking place to sign him at this point in time. He adds that the Reds are always linked with many players and that there is nothing concrete over their eagerness to sign the Brazilian defender.

Giving his own opinion on Beraldo, he wrote in his CaughtOffside column: “He’s very good player, a talented young centre-back. I like him, but I think he probably needs one more step before joining a super top club like Liverpool.” The Reds have benefitted from the rise of young defender Jarell Quansah this season and seem to be content with their defensive set-up for now, which is probably why they’re not in an advanced position to sign any other centre-back.
