What Is in Maatsen’s Future After Deadline Day Drama?
Fabrizio Romano claims that there is expected to be some clarification on the future of Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen “in the next weeks/months”. He adds that the Blues are currently waiting to find out if he will renew his contract with them or not.

Romano states that if he doesn’t decide to renew his deal with the club and they opt to sell him next year, then his price tag for a potential sale will probably be closer to what they agreed with Burnley on the transfer deadline.
This is in reference to reports that the Blues were ready to sell the 21-year-old defender to the Clarets at the end of the transfer window and even accepted a loan offer which also had the obligation to buy permanently next year for just over £30 million. However, Maatsen refused to go through with the move and will stay at Stamford Bridge until the January window.
What Has Mauricio Pochettino Said About Maatsen?
The 21-year-old defender enjoyed an impressive loan spell at Burnley last season, where he played a part in helping them get promoted to the Premier League. He made 39 appearances in the 2022/23 Championship campaign for the Clarets, scoring four goals and providing six assists.

Maatsen was integrated into Mauricio Pochettino’s squad and impressed him in the pre-season campaign, as he said about his impression of the winger: “I am so happy with him. He is a player that can play in different positions. He has quality, he understands the game, and he is such a clever player.” Despite him impressing the manager, the Dutch full-back doesn’t appear to be that sold on signing a long-term deal with Chelsea yet and it remains to be seen if he remains with them beyond this season or not.
