Tottenham Hotspur have not been able to find a suitable replacement for their former director of football Fabio Paratici, who left in April 2023 after getting banned by FIFA, but it appears that they might’ve identified a very experienced candidate to potentially replace them in Barcelona director Mateu Alemany.

Who Is Alemany?

A highly experienced figure in the football management scene in Spain, Alemany is actually a lawyer by profession, who later attained a master’s degree in Financial Accounting after his law degree. The 60-year-old has worked as the Managing Director, CEO and President of La Liga club Mallorca in the past and even rejected a chance to work as a director at Real Madrid in 2000.

Alemany gained fame for bringing Samuel Eto’o to Spain for just over £4 million before selling him to Barcelona in 2004 for over £20 million. Under his presidency, Mallorca also won the 2003 Copa Del Rey title. After leaving Mallorca, the Spaniard worked as a director for Valencia for a few years from 2017-2019, before joining the La Liga heavyweights under Joan Laporta’s presidency in 2021.

Since taking over his director role at Barcelona a few years ago, Alemany has been influential in helping them secure smart signings. He was the one to bring in the likes of Ilkay Gundogan and Andreas Christensen on free transfers, as well as signing quality players like Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde and Raphinha for the Blaugrana in recent years.

Tottenham Eyeing Alemany Appointment

Barcelona recently confirmed that club legend Deco would be taking up their Director of Football role soon, with Alemany set to leave his role. Now Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the Lilywhites are plotting a possible move for the 60-year-old to be their next Director of Football, which has been vacant since Paratici left.

Romano states that Spurs want him to take over from next month after he leaves his role at the Spanish side on September 2. Alemany was actually reported to have been offered a director role at Aston Villa earlier this summer, but Tottenham could soon present him with another opportunity to come to the Premier League. The Spaniard, who has been hailed as a ‘phenomenon’ for his impressive work at Barcelona, is yet to announce plans for his future after leaving the club.
