Leeds United’s Willy Gnonto was spotted in Harrogate on Saturday afternoon, reportedly out drinking whilst his teammates were taking part in an EFL Championship match. Social media user StuW1989 – the original poster of the picture – also stated that the Italian was “on the ale”, with Whites fans furious at his antics as the first-team lost to Birmingham City.

The Willy Gnonto Saga So Far

After Leeds’ relegation from the Premier League under Sam Allardyce, the club had a series of release clauses come into effect, including clauses for loans. Players such as Brenden Aaronson and Robin Koch have left under these agreements. However, not every star at Elland Road has such a clause.

Gnonto is one such player, with no loan or permanent release clause in his deal. As a result, the club put out a statement claiming that they will not offload the forward and intend to use him throughout the season. The Italian has refused to play a role in two matches now, including the Carabao Cup clash with Shrewsbury Town.

Leeds United Wonderkid Out in Harrogate

A Leeds player in Harrogate in isolation isn’t necessarily cause for concern, with the area being naturally beautiful as one of the more luxurious places to live in Yorkshire. However, for him to the there, whilst drinking, on a matchday is a big surprise.

Not only is the wonderkid desperate for a move, but this is actively harming his fitness levels. Athletes at that level have strict diet and nutrition plans, with the tricky forward drinking being another act of rebellion against his employer.

What This Means for Leeds United?

Daniel Farke’s side are continuing to struggle with life in the Championship, with injuries and transfer rumours severely affecting the squad. Last Word on Football exclusively revealed that Luis Sinisterra was not travelling prior to the match against the Blues, with this impact to squad depth preventing the Whites from even fielding a winger on the right flank.

Unless the Elland Road hierarchy resolves this issue quickly, players pushing for a move by refusing to play will continue to have a major impact on the club. The Gnonto saga will set the tone for the rest of the window, with 49ers Enterprises carefully considering every move.
