In an article detailing the rebuild awaiting new boss Mauricio Pochettino, Draper commented, “Chelsea insiders think that he may prove to be one of the best signings of last summer” when discussing the teenager.

Chelsea Believe Andrey Santos Could Be Their Best Signing

A Role to Fill

The midfield is a key area of need for the Blues with Enzo Fernandez needing a long-term partner. N’Golo Kante’s departure has sped up the process but the ageing Frenchman would have needed replacing sooner or later. Mate Kovacic, despite his abilities, is not exactly a great defensive mind.

A spot could open up for Santos next to the Argentine as the club looks for a long-term pairing. He has enough energy and skill on the ball to fill the role when needed, although he would preferably be used to rotate with Fernandez while another player takes on the defensive tasks.

High Hopes

According to Draper, those within the team believe they have pulled off a magnificent signing. Snapping up a talented midfielder at just 19 for a reported fee of £18 million could prove to be a bargain in the long run. The youngster has impressed for his country at U20 level and played a key part in Vasco de Gama returning to the top flight of Brazilian football.

While the 19-year-old won’t immediately find a spot in the Premier League he is sure to get opportunities to impress, especially if insiders are already considering him one of their best recent signings. Blues fans will be hoping he can fulfil this potential and become a staple of the first team.
