Barcelona have confirmed that Neymar Jr’s representatives visited the club’s offices in person with a view to terminating the contract between the two parties, making a payment of €222m in the process. This should mean that the Brazilian is now free to join Paris Saint-Germain.
The statement reads:
“On Thursday afternoon Neymar Jr’s legal representatives visited in person the Club’s offices and made the payment of 222 million euros in the player’s name with regards to the unilateral termination of the contract that united both parties.
As such, the Club will pass on to UEFA the details of the above operation so that they can determine the disciplinary responsibilities that may arise from this case.”
This suggests that Neymar has paid his own release clause to force through his move to the French side, which is in accordance with La Liga rules, as a player must buy himself out of his contract.
Barcelona will pass on the details to UEFA, as there is concern that Paris Saint-Germain could be violating their Financial Fair Play rules. Earlier today, La Liga refused to accept a €222m payment from the club to pay out the player’s buyout clause.
Regardless, it seems that Neymar is on the move to Paris, though the club themselves are yet to formally announce the deal. The 25-year-old made 186 appearances for the Catalan club, scoring 105 goals and winning two league titles, three Copa del Rey medals, and the Champions League, the latter of which came as part of a “treble” in 2014-15.
