‘Absolutely Disgraceful’: Wout Weghorst’s Season Has Not Been Good Enough; He’s Now Set to Leave

Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst on the floor after missing a good chance in the dying minutes against Fulham

On-loan Manchester United player Wout Weghorst has not had the fairytale move to Old Trafford that he would have dreamed of when he joined on a temporary deal in January. The striker has failed to score a single league goal for the Red Devils since signing over four months ago, and now, 17 Premier League appearances later, he is expected to return to his parent club Burnley.

Wout Weghorst’s Manchester United Spell Labeled ‘Absolutely Disgraceful; He’s Now Set to Leave

Wout Weghorst: A Budget Acquisition Who Failed to Impress

Weghorst was signed on loan in January as a low-risk, low-cost potential replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo who had left the club in November 2022, but after the last league game of the season, his spell at Old Trafford has been labeled “absolutely disgraceful”.

While his style of play isn’t exactly the same as clinical finishers like Harry Kane, the Dutch international was still expected by fans to come in and contribute to United’s goal tally in the second half of the season. Indeed, there was much excitement surrounding his height when he joined: standing at 6’6” Weghorst seemed to promise a focal point in the centre of United’s attack that had been missing for a number of years. However, despite being over six inches taller than the average Premier League player (5’11.9”), Weghorst has an aerial duel success rate of just 41%.

The 30-year-old has also looked sloppy and slow on the ball, and when opportunities in front of goal have presented themselves, he has failed to capitalise.

This was exemplified by a golden opportunity in the dying minutes of United’s season on Sunday as Facundo Pellistri sliced through Fulham’s midfield on the counterattack, allowing Jadon Sancho to deliver a pinpoint cross to Weghorst at the far post, but the striker was unable to bury the chance.

Now set to leave Old Trafford, Weghorst’s most positive moment in a red shirt will remain his assist in the Carabou Cup final, and while he will be fondly remembered for his, for want of a better word, vibes, fans will ultimately be happy for the Manchester side to move on, hopefully to more accomplished strikers.
