The Manchester United sale is reportedly now coming soon, with the Glazer family looking to complete the sale in the first quarter of 2023.

Glazer Family Ownership

Manchester United have been under the Glazer family’s ownership for almost 20 years: the family took over the team as the majority owner in 2005. During that time the Glazer family have seen lots of highs and lows.

Three successive Premier League titles from 2006-08 is the pinnacle of their success, but the turn of the decade led to some troubling times and has seen their local rivals Manchester City take control of the Manchester divide.

With the success of the Citizens and the recent lack of structure and success at the club, the Glazers came under serious pressure to sell. Finally, they put the club up for sale in late 2022 with a number of suitors possibly coming in to bid.

What This Means for the Winter

While the owners are looking to sell the club soon, the winter transfer window could not come at a worse time for United.

The club need investment in the forward line, and are looking to sign a striker in January, a profile which they felt Liverpool’s newest signing Cody Gakpo didn’t fit. United might not be able to pay a premium price for a star striker though with the owners looking to sell and having spent around £225 million last summer.

Potential suitors will not want to inherit a big cash outflow that they possibly will need to fund. The club will need to be strategic, working closely with the staff to find the right player for the right price.
