Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is really not that keen on selling his club captain Harry Maguire, despite having relegated him to a bench warmer this season. The Englishman has received a lot of criticism from fans over the last year for his inconsistent performances.

The Dutch gaffer is not really eager to sell the England international because he still values his qualities and his role in his squad. But when persisted about what it will take for United to sell him, Ten Hag said: “Only when he doesn’t want to be in these circumstances anymore (that he will be ready to sell him). Until that moment, I am happy with Maguire.”

Maguire himself is yet to voice any desire to leave Old Trafford after seeing himself benched with the majority of the Premier League games this season. He’s only started in three Premier League games this season, after almost regularly playing for the Red Devils in their league games over the last few seasons.

Maguire Gunning for United Starting Role After World Cup

Despite not starting a lot of league games for the Red Devils, the 29-year-old centre-back still remains a stalwart centre-back in Gareth Southgate’s system. Maguire started in every single one of England’s five games at the Qatar World Cup and produced some really impressive performances as well.

He helped them keep three clean sheets in the five games, with the Three Lions only conceding four goals in that period as well. He will now be hoping that his impressive World Cup showing can boost his chances of starting more games at the club level once the domestic season resumes.

For the time being, however, it appears that Maguire is a third-choice centre-back at Old Trafford. Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez have started nine of the league games together and appear to be the starting defensive pair for the Red Devils. The 29-year-old Englishman, who was dubbed for having ‘magnificent skills’ after starring in Man United’s 1-0 win over West Ham United in October, has to do something major to regain his starting role under Ten Hag.
