Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed his side will search to sign a suitable midfielder before the transfer window closes on September 1.

When broached on the matter of new arrivals, Klopp said: “Yes, I am the one who said we don’t need a midfielder, you were all right and I was wrong.

“Now we are going for a midfielder. We will do something but it has to be the right one.”

Liverpool’s Injury List Continues to Grow

Previously, the German coach had said: “It doesn’t look like anything will happen” regarding transfers. However, Liverpool currently have nine first-team players ruled out with injuries, as well as new signing Darwin Nunez facing a three-game suspension due to his red card against Crystal Palace.

Four of those injuries are midfielders; Thiago Alcantara, Curtis Jones, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, all of whom can be deployed in the starting 11 when fit.

Consequently, Klopp lined up against rivals Manchester United with Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Harvey Elliott in midfield – an unlikely trio given Milner’s age against United’s youthful attackers and Elliott’s lack of experience in the Premier League. They lost the game 2-1 and displayed a lacklustre performance on the pitch.

An Indifferent Start

The Merseyside team have picked up just one win from their four games so far, although they are the joint-top scorers in the division alongside Manchester City after demolishing Bournemouth 9-0 this weekend.

They began the 2022/2023 league campaign at Craven Cottage to face newly promoted Fulham. Liverpool came from a losing position twice to manage a 2-2 draw on opening day.

Klopp’s side then played their first home game of the season facing Crystal Palace at Anfield. Wilfried Zaha scored against the run of play to make it 1-0 and Patrick Vieira’s men looked comfortable in their efforts to keep Liverpool’s ever-threatening attackers quiet, before a moment of magic from Luis Diaz rescued a point in the 61st minute.

Whilst Klopp is yet to make his interest clear in a specific midfielder, there are only five days for the club to negotiate terms and oversee a deal for a new arrival – meaning prices may have increased for players on the market so that their current teams are able to fund a replacement.
